New research saying that left- or right-handedness develops in the womb reminds me of this talk I saw given by Leonard Shlain, author of The Alphabet Versus the Goddess.
Shlain has a bunch of often odd, often insightful observations about evolution. One of his theories is that left-handedness and color blindness are both adaptations to help human hunting groups fare better. At some times in a hunting trip, he says, a lefty would be at a certain advantage, depending maybe on how prey was running, or the particular spatial conformation of the hunting area. And color blindness can sometimes be useful in seeing through camouflage [the US Army has taken advantage of this], so a color blind hunter might be able to spot some prey more easily than the regular-visioned.
As some very circumstantial evidence for this proposition, Shlain says that both traits are found in about 1 in 8 men, and much less frequently in women. [Neat study showing that lefthandedness had the same frequency when people painted their own hands on the walls of caves 10k years ago.] Traditional hunting groups were about 8 men, so on average they would include one lefty and one colorblindy [?].
For the record, thinkness found Shlain's arguments for his newer book, Sex, Time, and Power, less persuasive than for Alphabet [even though, slighted reader, I have yet to read either]. Some of Sex was based on a few pretty leaky arguments.
For instance, the timing of his whole thesis is a little off. he points out that we're pretty lame animals in terms of our physical abilities to survive. He says the perception of cyclical time and its resultant gains -- primarily our sneaky strategizing and tool-making -- is what allows this wimpy animal to cut it. He says it was early homo sapiens women that made this discovery, only 150k years ago. But humans came out of trees and moved to this same general body type millions of years before that! So what allowed homo erectus and them to survive, if they were wimpy [significantly smaller than us] upright-walkers who couldn't even plan?
I asked him this question, and he went off into an interesting but comically off-topic treatise on how technology is increasing exponentially and it will soon blast off into another dimension. The singularity, or something. I now wonder a bit about his sanity and/or hearing.
