My first encounter with Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara was in the late spring of 1966 when, as a young Army Intelligence officer just rotated back from Asia, I was assigned to the General Staff in the Pentagon and directed to brief him. The first of a number of occasions when I either briefed the secretary or, more often, was a resource aide to a senior officer, I was cautioned by a nervous lieutenant colonel to expect questions but never, absolutely never, to ground my response in "intuition." It was the pre-Powerpoint age but all briefers were admonished to either have facts best supported by charts and numbers or to simply confess ignorance.
Interesting. thinkness has been thinknessing about this a lot recently, particularly about the wealth of information available via intuition (sorry, Bob). I've heard a little bit about this recently, but web searching I'm only getting some corporate self-help bullshit. (Hopefully there's more than that out there?) I've been thinking about how much we have in our minds that we don't have real conscious access to.
The metaphor I use to picture it is this: you come up to a busy street with a friend. You look both ways, think back to a thousand times you've crossed the street before, and walk across when it's clear. Your friend runs back to her house, and then comes back with a radar gun, a pedometer, a calculator, and one of those landscape-measuring scope dealies. She sits down, begins measuring the speed of the cars, the distance across the road, her own walking and running speed, etc., all to determine when, exactly, she should cross the road.

thoughts off the top of my head:
most animals are instinctual creatures. their reactions to circumstance aren't well thought out; they know to run like crazy if a sabre-tooth tiger suddenly jumps out at them. i figure humans have been social creatures long enough so that reactions to people and "feelings" about social situations occur at a sub-cognitive level. so if i'm talking to someone, and a part of me feels uneasy that i can't logically explain, i figure there's something deeper going on; my subconscious picking up on something subtle. i'll often trust that.
i don't think humans have as much of an "intuitive" sense of abstract things, like rocket science or market analysis. some people have spiritual beliefs that humans can tap into a universal consciousness that could give them guidance on a whole range of things; i'm skeptical about this, but admittedly am playing with the idea a bit.
but in general, i think getting in touch with your intuition is a good thing, especially for analytical types like me. and even if i'm wrong sometimes, no biggie, unless it's a situation where i'm trying to dodge traffic...
