I woke up today thinking about words that can be their own opposites, depending on their degree and the connotation of the word. 'Righteous,' 'sentimental,' and 'decadent' can all be either good or bad, depending on how they're used.
Consulting the dictionary (a novel concept) I see that it only shows this strange characteristic for the second of those words. The first definition of "sentimental", according to American Heritage via Dictionary.com: "Characterized or swayed by sentiment." Well, it's not necessarily positive, but it's certainly not negative. The second definition: "Affectedly or extravagantly emotional." It is often only context, I think, that helps illustrate whether the neutral or negative definition is in play.
As for the word "righteous," a quick search confirms that sometimes it means the same thing as "self-righteous": "Piously sure of one's own righteousness; moralistic." From a National Post (of Canada) article: "Perhaps its [sic] because he represents the kind of stereotypical environmentalist that neo-conservatives love to hate: narrow, strident, righteous, arrogant and futile." (I found many cases of the word used this way, but less often than it's used with its positive meaning: "Morally upright; without guilt or sin." People generally rely on "self-righteous" for the negative meaning, but sometimes reach for "righteous" itself.)
I had a little debate with my mother when I was home (remember the lack of thinkness? Debates with my mother.) about the meaning of "decadent." Of course, in its main use, the word is negative: "Marked by or providing unrestrained gratification; self-indulgent." (That is the second, and most applicable, definition.) But the word is used very often as a desirable quality in a dessert. My mother insisted that that was only a metaphorical usage of the word, and I agree, but I think this metaphorical usage of "decadent" is so common that it should be recognized independently. Googling "decadent cake" turns up over 8,000 hits, "decadent dessert" over 6,000, and "decadent chocolate" over 11,000 (all of these word pairs were quoted in the search, so the search is for that exact word combination). And if you're tempted to say that Google is simply turning up thousands of occasions where the word is misused by poor writers (is that alone enough to warrant recognition?), a quick Google News search shows that "decadent" has been used with a positive connotation in newspapers dozens of times over just the past month -- in New Zealand, Canada, the Philippines, the UK, and yes, in the New York Times.
Another word that may potentially mean its opposite is "diction" -- the first definition is "Choice and use of words in speech or writing," while the second is "Degree of clarity and distinctness of pronunciation in speech or singing; enunciation." Yes, these words aren't exactly "opposites" in a pure logical sense, but it could be in a practical sense: "It was hard to understand what he was saying because his diction was so poor." The word has done nothing to clarify whether he was incomprehensible because of what he was saying or how he was saying it. I think the second definition of the word should be promptly annihilated, and the first kept -- there is no other word that means "word choice," while the second definition of "diction" is simply synonymous with "enunciation." As I've shown before, I'm bossy when there are practical questions at stake in language.
(The name of this post, by the way, comes from the fact that the word "cleave" is, per legend, the only word that really means its own opposite: to come together or come apart.)

My very astute friend James once pointed out that words, when their definitions slip, frequently adopt a piece of their opposite in their new definition.
One of his favorites was "cool," as in "the doctor gave the lawyer a cool reception." In this context, "cool" suggests distance, and possibly contained rancor. (Dictionary.com says "Marked by indifference, disdain, or dislike.")
But after beatniks started using "cool" as a term of respect for those individuals who maintained a an appearance of calm self-control, the word began an evolution that has concluded with its meaning simply "great" ("what a cool video").
The upshot is that, when using "cool" to describe a person, I need an awful lot more context to know what's meant!
