Prominent newspapers, such as the NYTimes and the WaPost, have been going about as close as they ever will to claiming that the president and his boss, the veepee, are flat-out lying about connections between Al Qaeda and Iraq. Dubya and Cheney are claiming there were connections, and bashing the newspapers for claiming that there was not.
While the papers juxtapose the findings of the 9/11 commission -- no "collaborative relationship -- with the White House's claims, they don't really get the the heart of the matter. But Slate does.
The real trick here is that Bush is playing a lawyerly game, ducking and hiding and obfuscating. Jack Shafer captures well Dubya's stealthy maneuvers. But Cheney, he says, has flat-out lied, at times.
I wish Shafer would go just one step further to explain what is the real problem here: Bush very dishonestly warps the superficial, unimportant meetings between Al Qaeda and Saddam to make it sound like they were significant. He portrayed these meetings as important and dangerous, but they were piddling and pointless, and that's what the papers should point out.
It's pretty surprising that Bush, a man who has so much trouble with words, could have talked about this complicated topic so many times without slipping into any of the pure lies that Cheney happily spewed.
