Faculty have learned that the best way to attract funding in a competitive, peer-reviewed research culture is to become as specialized as possible, since this narrows the group of those likely to review their proposals (perhaps even to their colleagues), thereby driving even more the disciplinary fragmentation of the academy. As a result, academic disciplines dominate the modern research university, developing curriculum, marshaling resources, administering programs, and doling out rewards.
