Chloe writes a good defense of the movie Troy. Pretty good at convincing me, although that may not have been that difficult, as I haven't seen the movie, and the trailer seemed plenty fun enough.
One thing I like is her point about Gods being used to explain personal motivations:
There is a strong case to be made for seeing the gods as projections of human intention. In the Greek vision of the world, any time someone has an urge or idea, a god has put it there. A vestige of this concept survives in English, as the word 'inspire' means 'to breathe in', meaning, 'to be taken hold of by the spirit of the god who compels an action'.
Last year, when I was doing research for a forthcoming book on the social history of cotton, I had to study up on the history of Columbus' journeys to the "Indies." (This was relevant to the book because the people who lived there made clothes from cotton, as did the real "Indians," which only convinced the Great Navigator that he had found his promised land.) Columbus was a deeply religious man, and he explained his voyage in religious terms: that he was going to do God's will, and spread His message, and God told him to do so, and the like. It is also pretty damn clear -- especially looking back on the historical documents -- that God's will dovetailed extremely well with what was best for Columbus' earthly existence. How lucky that God pushed Columbus into such a profitable venture, no?
I don't doubt that he had honest religious feelings, but it illustrated that there is an interesting psychology involved when one believes fervently in anthropomorphic deities and one is also ambitious about attaining money, titles, and fame.

Along these lines, it becomes even more interesting that Bush believes God wants him to be president. This leaves us with an interesting dichotomy where bush is either a lunatic or the next messiah. I've always thought that the bible has been an extremely successful bookmeme because it gives people with columbus-like intentions the backing of divine intention. If you have a dubious plan at least it's nice to have the Big Guy at your back.
