So Stephen Glass' fictionalized account of his plagiaristic journalism career is coming out soon. Glass was a young journalist who made up a whole bunch of elements to a number of stories he published a few years ago in The New Republic and other mags. His stories were exquisitvely crafted and very appealing, but often loads of utter bullshit. He was fired soon after TNR found out that his story about hi-tech companies hiring hackers was pure hoonanny.
The weird thing is that his book is a novel about this whole escapade, but the main character is named Stephen. It's fictional, yet it's real. It his magnum apologia, yet it's fiction. Has Glass actually learned anything from this ordeal? Why is it that he feels he can just paper over his misdeeds with another piece of bullshit? Is he trying to use some kind of postmodern fiction/reality questioning as cover for his mendacity? To me, this reeks of amorality and a total lack of honor. I have a friend that's writing her grad thesis on novels that center around characters whose names are the same as the authors. I'll read her thesis and see what she says about this Glass affair.
